Memorial Day Observance At Forest Lawn

BUFFALO, N.Y. ( WKBW ) The sight of the flags at Forest Lawn Cemetery is impressive, but people who attended the ceremony said what is more impressive is the sacrifice of these military men and women.

"It is a veteran, not a preacher that has given us the freedom of religion. It is a veteran, not campus organizers that has given us the freedom of assembly," Erie County Commander of the American Legion Bill Miskell said.

These thousands of flags were put next to the graves of soldiers who did their part for the those freedoms we share today, many giving their lives in the line of duty.

"It should be emphasized through the years, that the veteran gave so much and we should never forget this," Miskell said.

After school children from across Western New York placed the flags on the sites, a ceremony was held with fellow veterans. Many people attended including fellow veterans, distinguished members of the community and families who wanted to share in the celebration of the veterans lives.

"It shows how dedicated our country is and there are so many people that that gave their lives for the country," South Park high school ROTC Student Sharon Blake said.

Wreaths were laid at the base of the American Legion Monument, while guns were fired and TAPS were played.

"It’s very heart-warming that everyone has come out to share this day and remember all the veterans. They took a little time out of their day to plant a flag on a veterans grave," American Legion member George Barton said.
